Hearing God
By Helen Porter

I grew up in a Christian home.  My father died when I was nine and left my mother with three kids and one who was born eight days after my father died.  We moved back to mother’s home place south of Armstrong, MO where mother’s brothers and family lived.  They took us to church each Sunday.  We moved to Fayette, MO and mother ran a rooming house, so then we moved into the town of Armstrong.  I attended church each Sunday.  It was there during a revival that I was saved.  I was 12 years old.  God picked me up from my seat and sat me down in front of the pastor.  He asked me if I asked God to forgive me and save me, and I said, “Yes.”  Several of my school friends were saved in that meeting as well.

Later we moved to Moberly, MO.  By then I was 14 years old.  I met my future husband when I was 16 years old; he wasn’t a Christian, but we began dating.  I was working at a dime store at the time.  Later my Baptist pastor married us.  In two-and-a-half years, our daughter was born.  At that time we lived five hours from church.  Our daughter was very ill when she was three years old and I stayed in the hospital with her for ten days.  God spoke to me early one morning while I was in prayer and He said that she would be healed.  We came home from the hospital.  It was when she was eight that she was saved.  I worked and prayed in private for my husband and so did people at church.  I bought him his own Bible and I am sure he read it while we were at church.

One dark night I heard my name called, and again my name was called.  I opened my eyes and saw a white glow at the foot of our bed.  God spoke to me and said, “He will be saved.”  In two weeks at the age of 32, my husband walked the aisle for Jesus.  We have enjoyed serving our Lord.  Our daughter has done God’s work since she was 14.  I asked God to use her in His work when she was around four years old.  She married a Christian and they have two Christian sons and daughters-in-law.  All of them work for our Lord.  God is so good.  The Bible is the roadway to life.
