It was Tuesday.
The day chosen to meet for lunch to take a refreshing break from the
“real” world and to fuel our friendship and encourage our hearts. This Tuesday started out pretty much the same way.
We ordered our usual foot-long ham, turkey with provolone cheese sandwich
stuffed inside the oat encrusted bread with toppings of our personal choosing,
and one bag of barbecue chips along with a pop and split it.
As is our custom, we prayed before we ate thanking God for our “real”
friendship with one another, asking for guidance to His direction and quick
obedience to do as He instructs us in our way to go and to thank him for the
food that will nourish our bodies and as He nourishes our soul…all in Jesus’
name.
Due to the time limit of only ONE hour for lunch, we stuff the food into our mouths, chew briefly, swallow hard and gulp our carbonated drink (I’m exaggerating a little here!) as we quickly pour out the day’s happenings and discuss possibilities of situations and solutions for challenges. We laugh, we cry, and sometimes, we burst into laughter disturbing the quiet lunch of others as they look at us with wonderment and a little smile. We know they just want to be in on what fun we’re having.
We
were about halfway done with our rowdy rendezvous when a pleasant woman
approached us with the kindest smile on her face and gently said, “Excuse me,
I couldn’t help but notice when I came in that you all were praying. I thought that was so cool and I wanted to bless you all with
my favorite cookie so I bought one for each of you.” She lovingly handed each one of us a wrapped cookie.
We hugged her and she was gone…just like that.
Our eyes misted over knowing that God had become so “real” again to
us in our everyday life. He
evidenced His love through the sweet gift of a Subway sugar cookie graced with
macadamia nuts and chunks of white chocolate chips.
Who was this woman? We
don’t know…but we’d like to. We
want her to know she so touched our lives with her sweet words and the sweetness
of the cookie. No cookie will ever
be as sweet as that one. Psalm
119:103 says, “How sweet are your words to my taste…sweeter than honey to my
mouth.” We now understand that
scripture more than ever.
Hmmmmmm…we’re even wondering if we were entertained by an angel! We were reminded of the scripture from Hebrews 13:2 which says, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” All we know is, our hearts were greatly touched by God’s care through that woman. That melt-in-your-mouth cookie will be a reminder to us of that Sweet Tuesday. We will continue to pray and thank God for that dear woman’s generous gift to us.
